In today’s fast-paced social media environment, it is imperative that students are transformed from passive consumers of media to active producers of media storytelling. One way to do this is to have them produce multimodal stories containing images, audio, transitions, and effects but to also guide them into understanding of the why behind their choices by breaking down the multimodal elements and revealing their function.
In this two-day workshop, faculty will learn to write for the screen by exploring two forms of multimodal storytelling: the digital essay and the digital story. A digital essay reflects course content and is similar to a written essay with the addition of images and audio to further punctuate the story’s meaning. A digital story is highly personalized. It is a story about a moment or event that is responsible for shaping or changing a person’s life. It is told through the “I” narrative and contains elements of emotion to bridge the audience to the storyteller.
In addition to leaving the workshop with an understanding of mutlimodal storytelling and writing for the screen, faculty will also develop a short scaffolded lesson plan for either the Digital Essay or the Digital Story.
This workshop is funded by the Mellon Digital Scholarship Grant and is open to tenured and tenure-track faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Video and Animation workshops will be offered this summer for a broader audience. Participants will receive a $400 stipend. Space is limited, apply soon.
